Volunteering at Scrap
We currently have eight regular volunteers helping us to keep Scrap running smoothly with ages ranging from 23 to 73. From Sophie, our youngest volunteer, recently moved to Leeds, studying for her Masters and has found Scrap a great place to find her feet in a new city, to Freddie, our oldest volunteer, who was looking to be part of a creative group, a community of like minded people and a regular catch up.
Day to day activities cover collecting donations from our lovely suppliers all over Yorkshire, sorting and packing those donations and creating new products with education in mind, processing our online shop orders, making displays and decorations for the shop, talking to and helping our customers with their projects, looking after our store room and keeping the Scrap shop looking ship shape. And eating Sarah’s baking.
We’re looking for more volunteers, to help us with stock and in the shop find out more at our Volunteer page here.
Volunteer Christine shares her experience of volunteering at Scrap.
What made you want to volunteer at Scrap?
I’d become newly semi-retired and wanted to do something “good” with my extra time. I’d always loved Scrap, and when I found out that you could volunteer I jumped at the chance! The idea of being surrounded by all the amazingness that is Scrap, working with lovely people, getting the chance to explore and footle about and just be generally useful was an opportunity too good to miss.
What you get out of it?
I think Scrap is a Happy Place for a lot of people – me too! Just seeing the building on my way in makes me smile, the warm welcome (especially from the Scrap dogs!), and the laid back and friendly atmosphere just make it such a lovely place to be. I really enjoy the variety of the work – one day I’ll be winding punchinella on the special, magical wooden winding contraption, one day helping out on the till, one day mooching around and chatting to customers, one day making giant paper flowers – every day is different and I love that.
What you think the best bits are about Scrap?
The first moment you step through the door! It has a “Woooooooo!” factor like nowhere else!
The smell! It’s all woody and beautiful scents from the refills section.
The ethos – rescuing stuff from landfill and reusing it for creativity and play, it’s brilliant.
The people – and dogs! – are all so lovely. I couldn’t hope to work with a friendlier bunch!
