Wild Service Festival: WORKSHOP – Discover Hedgerow Arts with Taylorbird Botanicals

Unleash your creativity and delve into the artistic secrets of the native hedgerow in these two workshops with natural artist Paula Taylor of Taylorbird Botanicals.

Paula’s creative journey stems from a lifelong connection to nature, nurtured by childhood experiences of growing food with her father.

Her creative practice is a joyful immersion in and experimentation with the natural world. As an early years and forest school practitioner, Paula understands the power of open-ended exploration and play, which informs her tactile artistic method, where the process is as vital as the outcome. She often works directly with natural materials, weaving with fibres or experimenting with natural dyes. ‘Touching the earth’ grounds her, informing her projects with the cycles of nature. Her passion as a community garden enthusiast provides constant inspiration, and her role as a nature educator also sees her share this transformative power. Through workshops and her practice, she empowers communities to embrace the outdoors, fostering well-being and a deeper environmental connection. Paula highlights the profound impact of nature on personal growth and community, encouraging others to find creative inspiration in its embrace.

This day will consist of two workshops under the title Discover Hedgerow Arts. Unleash your creativity and delve into the artistic secrets of the native hedgerow with natural artist Paula Taylor of Taylorbird Botanicals.

In Natural Dyes and Inks you’ll learn how to extract colour from foraged plants, creating cotton swatches dyed with natural pigments and a sample of drawing ink, all for you to take home. We’ll also experiment with lake pigments to make printing ink for unique nature prints on paper or fabric.

In Explore Hedgerow Fibres you’ll discover which plants are suitable for cordage and weaving, connecting with ancient artisan traditions, as you craft your own cordage or a tiny woven basket for you to take home.

Come learn, create, and unlock the boundless creative potential of the hedgerow!

This event is from 11am – 3pm, the cost is £50 for the day which you can buy at Eventbrite here, there are limited places.

Refreshments are not included but the SCRAP Cafe is open for hot and cold drinks and cakes, and you are welcome to bring your own refreshments.

This event is part of the Wild Service Festival, a combination of free and paid events encompassing visual poetry, music, spoken word, talks, and workshops, the Wild Service Festival celebrates the creative and practical ways we can simultaneously reconnect with and become better guardians of nature, while improving our well-being through the power of participation.

Britain ranks last in Europe on biodiversity, wellbeing, and nature connectedness. Nature is suffering, and so are we. ‘Wild Service’ – the visionary concept and book crafted by the Right to Roam campaign – argues that humanity’s loss and nature’s need are two sides of the same story. It calls for mass reconnection to the land and a commitment to its restoration.
